Classwork
We will be working on Struggles for Justice this week.
Students will be working in pre-determined groups. Each group will be responsible for teaching the rest of the class about their groups' particular struggle for justice. Presentations will be on Thursday.
We have an in-class work sheet dealing with Ida B. Wells on Friday. This will be due at the end of class.
Homework
Students need to read ages 660-665 in our History books.

Classwork
We will begin chapter 19, Political Reform and the Progressive Era. We will cover pages 640-665 in our history book and use our supplemental series as well. I will pass out a note-taking packet for this chapter which will be due when we finish all our work. As of now,that date looks like the week of Dec. 13th but that may change.
All students will receive their first DBQ assignment on Monday. The theme for this document based question is, The Progressive Era ,and they will have some class time to work on this but will need to use their time at home as well.
This will be due on Tuesday, 12/7. We will have a quiz this week on the Progressive Presidents. Students will need to make sure they have good notes from section 2 of their history books. The quiz will be open note.

Welcome to the 2nd trimester!
I encourage everyone to review the syllabus to familiarize themselves with the curriculum for this trimester. Also review the late work practice as it does change after mid-term.

Monday finds us analyzing political cartoons and writing a brief response to the material. We have a modified schedule on Tuesday and will have a variety of educational activities to choose from in class. The afternoon looks exciting with the entire school participating in PBIS activities.

We continue our study of Industry and Urban Growth. J.P.Morgan and the concepts of a monopoly will be explored and students will have a Pro/Con activity to work on with a partner in class. We continue to read, at home, from our history books. Pages 619-624 need to be read by the end of the week. Notes are to be taken and kept in a notebook. These notes are used to help with any quizzes we may have and we will have one this week!

Homework/Classwork for the week of September 6, 2010
We will continue our Constitution work this week both in class and at home. Pages 20-25 will be covered and all the questions need to be answered.
We will watch a dvd that will hopefully give us a better view of the three branches of our government.
Students will work in small groups processing the steps of how a bill becomes law. We will have our first open note/open book quiz on Friday so be ready.
Current Events and Geography will begin the week of the 13th!

We made it through the first week of school!! So far, so good. I am very excited to get our first unit underway. We will begin the U.S. Constitution on Monday, August 30, 2010. Our test, which students must pass to graduate, will be given mid October. The actual date will be posted soon. We will be working on this unit in class and at home. I like to show movies that represent different aspects of our government and how it works so be on the look-out for names and dates of the viewing.

Students will receive their copy of the Social Studies books, to be kept at home,on Monday as well. These need to be returned at the end of the year in good condition.

A syllabus is being printed and everyone will receive a copy as soon as it gets here :-)

We will begin our official week of homework, after the Labor Day holiday. Everyone knows there are two homework assignments every week. Current Events and Geography.

History
I hope everyone enjoyed the 3-day weekend! This week we will be continuing our study of the Great Depression and the New Deal. We will be focusing more on President Franklin Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Students will be assigned a group project in which they will have to "teach" the rest of the class a section of the New Deal. Don't worry, this project will be explained in detail!

Don't forget to continue to work on your note-taking; it will be due at the end of this unit. Also, any unused current event passes need to be turned in by Friday, February 19th for extra credit!

Before discussing the upcoming week, I would like to introduce myself to everyone. My name is Rachel Juarez and I am very excited to be completing my student teaching in Ms. CP's classroom! I have had a wonderful time getting to know the students and I am looking forward to the next three months. I will be in Ms. CP's classroom until April 23rd before returning to Dominican University for graduation this May.


History

This week we will be discussing the Woman's Suffrage movement. We will be discussing the 72 year fight for suffrage from the Seneca Falls Convention to the passing of the 19th Amendment. Students will be analyzing political cartoons, watching censored parts of Iron Jawed Angels, and of course writing! We will be discussing the views of multiple suffrage groups (including anti-suffragists) as well as the role President Woodrow Wilson played.
