Welcome Back!
Hi everyone. I hope you have had an awesome Summer and are ready to begin your final year of Elementary School! As an 8th grader you will have more responsibility at school and home. That is a good thing :-)
I am looking forward to meeting everyone and getting the school year under way.
We will have a student teacher with us until December. Ms.Reilly is her name and I know already she is a great teacher!
Remember to have a good attitude and come prepared.

Week of May 31, 2011
I hope everyone enjoyed our long weekend! We have a variety of activities this week. There is no homework, just classwork.
Make sure you bring your history books back to school as soon as possible. If they are not returned, you will be charged for them!
School is not over until Monday, June 6th after Graduation!
Expect to participate in classroom discussions and activities.
Locker clean-out will be this week so be prepared with a bag of some sort to take your things home.

Classwork
We will continue our study of the 1960's this week. We'll read from our supplemental book, watch a dvd or two, and have partner activities. A few things we'll cover this week are: Women, Space, Viet Nam, and Cesar Chavez. Thursday is a 'dress-up' day and music appreciation. Come dressed in 1960's clothing and get extra credit! We have a visit from O.P.R.F. this Friday from 9:30-11:30.

We will explore the Korean War this week through a variety of activities. A dvd, The Forgotten War, will be watched on Tuesday and students will need to have at least 10 items of interest recorded. This will be due at the end of class. They will work in groups on Wednesday taking the role of several leaders in an activity, What Would You Do? We will read from our history book and our supplemental texts as well.

Classwork
We will spend a couple of days learning about Gerda Weissmann and her journey through the Holocaust. We will watch the documentary film, One Survivor Remembers, and discuss the incredible strength she had to survive her years of captivity. It is a story of hope and how many people managed to make it through this horrible period in our World's history.
We will begin Chapter 25 in our History books and explore the 1950's. Students need to read pages in their book and be ready for class discussion. Pages 842-847 must be read before Thursday. We will also have readings from our supplementary book, All The People.
We will have two classroom activities dealing with McCarthy. The work that does not get completed in class, will become homework.

We will explore Pearl Harbor and the horror of that day and our involvement in the Pacific. Japanese Americans and internment camps will be discussed, and we will decided for ourselves if dropping the Atomic Bomb was a good thing or not. We will also have small group work that will focus on the heroic life of Hannah Szenes and her fight to help save the Jews of Hungary. We will use our supplemental book, War, Peace and All That Jazz, and see some news reels of Pearl Harbor and the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Welcome back from Spring Break. I hope everyone enjoyed some time away from school and we are all re-energized for the last few months of school!!

Classwork
We will be discussing the war and it's impact here at home and overseas. We will read from War,Peace, and All That Jazz, watch actual film footage of the Normandy invasion, and watch the first 15 minutes of Saving Private Ryan on Friday. Don't forget your signed permission slip must be turned in by Thursday or you WILL not be able to watch the film. There will be an essay comparing the actual footage to Hollywood's interpretation.
Keep working on the chapter packet. Quiz 3 is Tuesday!

Classwork
We will begin our WWII unit this week. We will explore many aspects of the war from life at home to the major battles being fought in Europe and the Pacific. Students will have a chapter note-taking packet to work on every week. We will have weekly quizzes, movies, group assignments, and writing activities. We will have a compare/contrast activity dealing with the landing on Omaha Beach. More details to come regarding this.
This week we get our basic foundation built with information leading up to the conflict. We have a modified schedule Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, because of Literacy Week activities.

We will be finishing up our mini unit on the 1920's! We have two writing activities, The Teapot Dome and Prohibition, which we will work on in class Monday and Tuesday. We will begin our unit on the Great War after we have a short open-packet quiz on chapter 20. An information packet will be handed out that outlines the details of this war. Chapter 21 note-taking packet will be passed out and reviewed as well. ALL parts of this packet will need to be answered! There will be several open packet quizzes during our study of this unit. We will be reading from our text, as well as our supplemental text, Age of Extremes.
